FAMILY: Phragmites
USES: Used for its impressive plume display. Provides plenty of movement in the landscape. Used in coastal shoreline areas, as a transitional plant between land and water in a lake, pond or stream. Grows well in planters, containers or pots.
SIZE: Grows 2 – 4m tall with an almost indefinite clumping spread of. Initially fast growing to 1.5m tall. Plants grown in water will grow faster than those in soil.
LOCATION: Full sun and reflected heat to partial shade provided there is sufficient moisture available at all times. Excellent wind resistance.
SOIL: Accepts most soils, preferring an open loamy soil with a pH 5.1 – 8.5, strongly acidic to alkaline. Needs a continually moist soil.
FERTILISER: Apply a slow release 14:14:14 NPK spring and autumn.
WATER: Keep soil moist. Not very drought tolerant. Heavy water requirement. The wetter the roots, the more it thrives.
