‘Old Man Saltbush’
FAMILY: Atriplex
USES: Does well as a pioneer plant, for soil stabilisation, as a barrier plant and as a clipped (mown) groundcover. A good xerophytic plant in hydroseed mixes and in transitional areas.
SIZE: Grows 2 – 3m tall with a 2 – 4m spread. Medium growth rate. Has an erect to spreading habit. Densely branched.
LOCATION: Full sun and reflected heat. Accepts coastal locations with protection from direct sea wind. Does well in desert areas and accepts hot, dry desert wind.
SOIL: Tolerant of most soils although is best in a free draining soil with a deep profile. pH 6.6 – 8.5, neutral to alkaline. Does not do so well in acidic soils.
FERTILISER: Apply a slow release 13:13:13 NPK annually in spring.
WATER: Keep soil moist. Drought tolerant once established, preferring regular applications for best growth. Does not accept over irrigation or waterlogging in poorly drained soils.
