‘European Fan Palm’
FAMILY: Chamaerops
USES: Provides a great tropical and sculptural effect. A fine specimen palm used singly or in groups in courtyards, intimate and restricted spaces, as a silhouette, accent, focal point on roof gardens, patios and entrance areas to create a strong visual effect.
SIZE: Grows to 2 – 3m tall with a 3m spread at a rate of 15 – 20 cm p/a.
LOCATION: Full sun to partial shade. Seems to do best with its head in the sun and its lower trunk and roots shaded. Does well in humid and coastal locations. Not so good in the hotter drier interior regions unless near a lawn or beside a water body.
SOIL: Best in an organically enriched, moisture retentive, fertile soil with a pH 6.1 – 7.8, mildly acidic to mildly alkaline. Will show leaf chlorosis if soil is too alkaline or saline (apply Fe and Mg), also watch for K deficiency and apply K sulphate if required.
FERTILISER: Apply a slow release 8:2:12 NPK + 4Mg with trace elements at a rate of 700gr. Per 10m2 of canopy every six months.
WATER: Keep soil moist. Requires regular irrigation for best appearance and growth. Does not accept over irrigation or waterlogging for long periods of time. Although drought tolerant once established, water stress may cause yellowing of the leaves.
