FAMILY: Ficus

USES: Provides a dense, deep green backdrop effect on walls. Best planted on the North and East sides of buildings and structures. The juvenile form is more attractive than the mature form. Ideal for hiding ugly walls and is often used on topiary frames, planters, hanging baskets.

SIZE: There is really no limit to the spread of this plant. Slow to start, faster thereafter. Grows at a rate of 1-2m2 p/a.

LOCATION: Does best in partial shade and bright indirect light. Does well in the humidity of coastal areas and in protected locations in the interior regions. Too strong and hot direct midsummer sun will cause the leaves to yellow, dry and drop off.

SOIL: Best in an organically enriched free draining fertile soil with a pH 5.6 – 7.5, acidic to neutral.

FERTILISER: Apply a slow release 19:6:12 NPK annually in spring. Watch for micronutrient deficiency in alkaline soils. May also require additional N as this is a greedy feeder, especially when mature.

WATER: Keep soil moist. This plant has a moderate water requirement. Does not accept over irrigation or waterlogging.
