PHOENIX ROEBELENII

Pygmy Date Palm’

FAMILY: Phoenix

USES: A fine specimen palm used in courtyards, intimate and restricted spaces, as a silhouette, accent, focal point on patios and entrance areas to create a strong tropical effect.

SIZE: Grows to 2 – 4m tall with a 1.85m spread at a rate of 15 – 20 cm p/a.

LOCATION: Full sun to partial shade. Seems to do best with its head in the sun and its lower trunk and roots shaded. Does well in humid and coastal locations. Not so good in the hotter drier interior regions.

SOIL: Best in an organically enriched, moisture retentive, fertile soil with a pH 6.1 – 6.5, mildly acidic. Will show leaf chlorosis if soil is too alkaline or saline (apply Mn and Mg), also watch for K deficiency.

FERTILISER: Apply a slow release 20:10:5 NPK with trace elements annually in spring.

WATER: Keep soil moist. Requires regular irrigation. Does not accept over irrigation or waterlogging. Water stress may cause yellowing of the leaves.
