Narrow Leaf Cat’s Tail’
FAMILY:
USES: A hardy marginal aquatic reed used for its vertical plume display which provides movement and a point of interest in the transition from land to water. Does well in large containers or pots. Often seen as an accent in slow moving streams, ponds, lakes, water features and en masse with its large clumps of strap like foliage.
SIZE: Growth is variable and ranges from 1.8m to 2.5m in height (with flower stalks) and a 50cm spread.
LOCATION: Full sun to partial shade provided there is sufficient moisture available. Best with some protection from direct midsummer sun in the open, drier, hot, desert regions where possible. Prefers the coastal, more humid areas.
SOIL: Best in an organically enriched medium to heavy loam with poor to no drainage. Soil must be kept consistently wet. pH 6.1 – 7.8 mildly acidic to mildly alkaline.
FERTILISER: Apply a slow release aquatic fertiliser with a 10:10:10 NPK annually in spring. Regular fertilising will help the plant achieve maximum effect.
WATER: Fresh water. Do not allow the soil to dry out between waterings. These plants have no drought tolerant and will quickly die back if drought stressed. Change the water for container plants every two months or so.
